Sailing Team
Tim Angle
(Marblehead, MA) is Team Odyssey’s mainsheet trimmer and team manager.
Tim helps Rick set event schedules, prepare and maintain the boat, and
coordinate team logistics. At 24 – the youngest member of the team –
Tim has been sailing since age 8 and racing since he was 12. Tim lost
his arm, several toes and fingertips to an attack of Meningitis that
nearly killed him, while in his freshman year at the University of
Wisconsin. This didn’t stop his racing, however – he recently sailed
with the university’s sailing team at the Collegiate Sloop National
Championship. A senior, he’ll graduate in May with a degree in
Electrical Engineering. Tim also works in the Marketing and Media
department at iRobot Corporation.
Maureen
McKinnon-Tucker (Marblehead, MA) trims jib for the team. Maureen is
also a paraplegic, following her fall from an 13-foot sea wall 7 years
ago, while watching her husband race J-24's. Being a wheelchair-user hasn’t
slowed Maureen down however, she continues to run her own floral design
business, is mother to a 3 yr old and is active in several other sports
in addition to sailing. Maureen is on the board of the local Spinal Cord
Injury Chapter and volunteers considerable time mentoring people with
new spinal cord injuries. She’s also on the board of the Marblehead
Festival of the Arts and is an active fund-raiser for HIV/Aids events.
Maureen was the first woman to make the US Disabled Sailing Team, and is
hoping to be the first woman to represent US sailing at the Paralympics
in Athens next year.
Richard
Hughes (Kennasaw, GA) is both mainsheet and jib trimmer for Team
Odyssey. Richard is a below-the-knee amputee, having lost his leg in his
early 20’s during a sailboat accident. Richard works as a prothesist,
designing and developing artificial limbs for other amputees including
children. When not working or sailing, Richard is an avid outdoor
enthusiast.
